August 16 and 17, 2020 Colorado for Days! The Castle!

We haven’t visited any popular historical sites recently, and there’s not a National Park in sight, but we lucked out today! For your enjoyment we offer a magical castle out in the middle of nowhere. “For nearly 60 years, Jim Bishop has been constructing one of the most impressive monuments to perseverance in Colorado. Bishop castle is a monumental statue in stone and iron that cries loud testament to the beauty and glory of not only Having a Dream, but Sticking with your Dream no matter what, and most importantly, that if you do believe in yourself and strive to maintain that belief, anything can happen! Three full stories of interior rooms complete with a Grand Ballroom, soaring towers and bridges with vistas of a hundred miles, and a Fire-Breathing Dragon make the Bishop Castle quite the unforgettable experience! Hey!! Is that a princess, or Betty Boop??

Hey Peter, get down! You have to see it to believe it!

We’re really happy to be out of the humidity. Our bug bites are healing nicely. Time to drag out the long pants and jackets. They say we are over half way across the Trans America Trail. It’s seems as though we spend as much time driving North and South as East to West, but we are making progress.

Colorado is home to the “Fourteeners”. There are well over a dozen mountain peaks in this area over 14,000 feet and we plan on driving over several mountain passes near that height. We’ve been driving and camping at an average of 10,000 ft for the past two days and after crossing the plains at around 1,000 ft elevation or less, it’s taking some time to adjust to the elevation. We’re all feeling the shortness of breath and easy fatigue. We’re marveling at the bicyclists that are riding 40 mile days at this elevation.

We’ve been to Colorado and Utah many times to run these trails in both ATV’s and jeeps. The major pass that we have not attempted is Black Bear Pass near Telluride. We’re really looking forward to that one which has a reputation for being a really scary ride. We’ve finally got the hang of the GoPro camera and hope to film the ride down. Yikes!
